During the Exam
The usual MRI exam will last between 30 to 60 minutes as a normal standard but may be longer if more areas of the body need to be examined as required and asked for by the treating physician.
In order to make the MRI exam more pleasant and relaxing, you are able to bring a CD of your favorite music to listen to during the exam. The technician will be in constant communication with you and can adjust the volume level according to your comfort level. A full repertoire of music is also available at the center for your use. Walkmans and other portable electronic music devices will not be allowed in the exam room.
Claustrophobia
If you suffer from claustrophobia (a fear of small, contained spaces) it is important to know that you are not alone in this fear. The technician is there to help you through your exam and you will have the ability to be in constant communication with them via a small hand held device designed to use in case of emergency.
The Ville Marie MRI Center is the only Canadian MRI Center to be built high above ground and with windows and direct sunlight and a view to minimize claustrophobia associated with most MRI Centers that are fully closed in.
It will be important that you mention this at the time of booking your appointment and you must arrive a full thirty minutes before the exam time. The technician will be able to administer one Ativan, a medication designed to help you relax and possibly sleep during your exam.
You must come accompanied to your appointment as you will not be allowed, by law, to operate a motor vehicle for twelve hours after receiving the Ativan.
